Abstract

Acceptance of behaviorism is discussed during two periods of the twentieth century when behaviorism was increasing in both popular appeal and rate of criticism. Possible reasons for rejection of Watsonian Behaviorism in the 1930s are outlined and parallels are drawn between the behaviorism of today and that of the earlier period. Common problems included the use of unnecessarily offensive terminology, the aggressive manner in which behavioral approaches are presented, and the tendency to treat the discoveries and technology of behavioral psychology as unique rather than as a part of a much larger body of valid research.
